At the Board of Commissioners meeting held Thursday evening at City Hall, Lieutenant Jason Valentine with the Shelby County Sheriff Office (SCSO) provided an update on Lakeland crime. The report, which can be found here, covered all reported crimes in the month of January.

Lt. Valentine told commissioners there were 27 reported crimes in January, down from 45 in the month of December. As usual, the most common crime in Lakeland is theft from a motor vehicle, but also included some cases of drugs, intimidation, and simple assault. One particular crime Lieutenant Valentine brought up was an unusual event at eSporta Fitness. Mr. Valentine said a dozen cars were broken into within a 24 hour period earlier in the month and that crime is currently under investigation.

Lieutenant Valentine was also excited to tell commissioners about the new S.H.A.R.E program from SCSO. S.H.A.R.E stands for Sheriff’s Hub and Resource Exchange. With the new program, Lakeland residents can now upload any video or picture they have of a crime, either from their home security cameras or their phone, directly thru the Sherriff’s office website or phone app. Described as a “problem-solving partnership with the community” Lieutenant Valentine said those videos and images are anonymous and go directly to detectives.

The Lieutenant hopes to have “share cards” available at City Hall soon so information about the program can be spread easily.
