New Canada Road Finally Underway After Years of Planning

Crews on October 24, 2025, are already taking down trees where New Canada Road will connect to William Little Drive in Planation Hills. The project is expected to last until 2028.

After 20 years of planning, design work, and coordination, construction is officially moving forward on the New Canada Road project—a major roadway upgrade that will introduce a new four-lane corridor from north of I-40 at Beverle Rivera Drive to Highway 70. The project is designed to improve safety, reduce congestion, and support the continued growth in Lakeland expected to occur over the next 20 years.

The project is primarily funded through a federal grant covering 80% of the total cost. The remaining 20% will be provided through a local match, supported in part by a loan through the USDA Rural Development program. Funding for the City’s contribution is included in the Fiscal Year 2026 General Fund budget.

Officials say a phased construction approach will take place over the next 3 years.

Phase 1 — Currently Underway
The first phase includes construction of a four-lane roadway segment extending from Beverle Rivera Drive to William Little Drive. It also involves building a two-lane roadway from William Little Drive to Highway 70. This initial work focuses on establishing the foundational roadway needed to support future expansion.

Phase 2 — Starting Early 2027
Phase 2 will add the remaining two lanes between William Little Drive and Highway 70, completing the full four-lane route. This phase will introduce additional improvements such as a landscaped median, multi-use trails for pedestrians and cyclists, and a new traffic signal at the Highway 70 intersection—features intended to enhance both safety and mobility.

Construction equipment is parked off William Little Drive where New Canada Road will connect sometime next year.

Completion of New Canada Road is expected sometime in the fall of 2028. Officials stress the improvements will not only ease current travel demands but also improve long-term transportation efficiency for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Mayor Josh Roman told Lakeland Currents while he was originally against the project over the years, now that it’s here he wants the project to be a success. “I think I’m the only person in the last 20 years that has voted no against this project but now that it is here and active I will do everything I can to make sure it is the beautiful road that has been envisioned for many years,” he said.

Construction signage and updates will be provided as work continues, with the City encouraging residents to stay informed about traffic impacts throughout the construction process.
