After approving the consent agenda, Board members discussed updates to the instructional calendar for 2018-19. Dr. Ted Horrell, Lakeland School System (LSS) superintendent, said he has talked with Tammy Mason, superintendent for ACS (Arlington Community Schools) regarding slight changes they might make to the calendar. Noting that those changes which could impact parent/teacher conference would likely be amenable in Lakeland, he suggested the Board take no action on any updates until ACS meets Dec. 19. Thus the calendar updates discussion was moved to January 2018.
The Board did approve a change to their meeting schedule. The Feb. 12 regular business meeting coincides with the annual “Day on the Hill” in Nashville so the February business meeting will be Feb. 5. There will be no work session in February.
Speaking about potential legislation in Nashville LSB Member Geoff Hicks said bills to watch would be for seat belts on school buses and “super vouchers” for private schools as well as education savings accounts. He also mentioned TSBA (Tennessee School Board Association) initiatives including surplus property and the TNReady tests.
Dr. Horrell mentioned holiday events at both the middle and elementary schools this month, “Showcasing the talents of students,” he said.
He reported to the Board that school staff is “Kicking off conversations” about online registration through Skyward, school management software. This would be a more complete online registration than this year. “Soup to nuts,” he said. Additionally he said the financial report is posted on the LSS website.
LBS Vice Chair Laura Harrison said the pom and cheer squads had a joint clinic this past weekend and were featured at the boys’ basketball game halftime. “It was a fun event for the kids and parents,” she said.
