By Carl Helton, LC staff

Today LES (Lakeland Elementary School) had its Spelling Bee with two students representing each class from the third and fourth grades for a total of 34 spellers competing.

Lakeland School System Superintendent Dr, Ted Horrell was on hand to be the official word caller. Dr. Horrell started off telling all the competitors how proud they should be for representing their classes and what an honor it was to compete no matter the overall winner. The rules were explained with each student given a practice round before the competition began.

A variety of words was called for each student to spell correctly or be eliminated. There was a judging team that consisted: Kristen Newton, Lakita Dennis, Christy Estes, Jessica Bailey and Johnna Herbison.

As each round became more challenging students were eliminated one by one until the three remaining contestants were left for the final championship round; Third graders Langdon Estes and Chance Gallagher with fourth grader Ryan Green.

There was a lot of excitement from the students (and parents) in the audience as Chance and Ryan battled it out for first place.  In the end, Ryan Green rose to victory as the Spelling Bee Champion.

Fourth grade teachers Jessica Bailey and Ms. Newton coordinated the Spelling Bee.
