Former Lakeland Commissioner Wesley Wright has officially entered the race for the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, seeking the District 3 seat currently held by Mick Wright, who is term-limited. The two Wright’s are not related but have known each other for years. Wright made his announcement on Friday, Aug. 8, stating that after more than a year of consideration, the time was right to make his decision.
District 3 covers Lakeland, Bartlett, and surrounding communities, including Brunswick south of the Loosahatchie River. The primary election is scheduled for May 5, 2026. Candidates can begin picking up petitions Dec. 22, with a qualifying deadline of Feb. 19. Early voting will run April 15–30.
Wright, first elected to the Lakeland Board of Commissioners in 2017 after winning a special election by just eight votes, went on to secure a full four-year term in 2020. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives such as founding the Lakeland Yard Sale 12 years ago, starting the Lakeland Arts Council, and helping introduce Flock security cameras to the city in collaboration with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. He also advocated for the creation of a full K–12 Lakeland School System and has consistently promoted smart growth, walkability, and support for local businesses.
In announcing his campaign, Wright emphasized his longstanding ties to both Lakeland and Bartlett.
“Bartlett has been a great neighbor to my family and Lakeland. Most of my jogging and walking takes place in Davies Plantation,” Wright said. “I’ve been a friend to Bartlett and have rooted for their success in education, business, and more for decades. My stance on education, safety, and other key issues aligns with my fellow residents in District 3. I want to be known as a public servant first and foremost.”
Wright noted that his platform closely mirrors that of current Commissioner Mick Wright and said he looks forward to the opportunity to continue that work at the county level.
