During the May 7 Board of Commissioners meeting, Mayor Josh Roman and the Lakeland Board of Commissioners recognized May 17–23, 2026 as Public Works Week in the City of Lakeland, honoring the employees who help keep the city’s infrastructure, facilities, and essential services running smoothly each day.

This year’s national Public Works Week theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” recognizes the essential role public works professionals play in maintaining and improving the quality of life for residents each day.

While many residents may associate public works with roadwork and heavy equipment, Lakeland’s Public Works Department is made up of a wide range of dedicated professionals working behind the scenes to keep the city operating efficiently. The department includes wastewater personnel, engineers, solid waste supervisors, street crews, fleet mechanics, stormwater staff, administrative support staff, and many others who work together to serve the community.

The department’s dedication and resilience were especially evident during this year’s winter storm, as crews worked long hours in difficult conditions to help maintain safe roadways, respond to weather-related issues, protect infrastructure, and support residents throughout the storm event.

The City of Lakeland encourages residents to join in recognizing and thanking Public Works employees for the vital services they provide year-round.
