Welcome To Lakeland I-40 Signs Under Construction

Crews working on new entrance signs of I-40

Work on new “City Of Lakeland” signs, which will welcome visitors exiting off I-40 onto Canada Road, begin construction today (January 15, 2021).

Construction crews could be seen pouring the concrete footings for the sign that will be located on the north side of the Interstate. According to Commissioner Jim Atkinson and city engineer Emily Harrell, the entrance signs will be the same fieldstone and limestone design that can be seen in various other locations in Lakeland. Mrs. Harrell also made a point to say landscaping will also be part of the sign project. The signs will be located off both I-40 exits.

A similar design will welcome visitors to Lakeland off I-40

The signs have been a popular addition to Lakeland when the concept came to fruition under former Mayor Wyatt Bunker. A grant by former Shelby County Commissioner David Reaves helped provide the initial funding for the signs and Lakeland took advantage.  Once complete this will be the 4th and 5th sign at Lakeland entry points. The other signs are located in the Stonebridge area next to Sprouts, one at Canada Road and Highway 64 next to Walgreens and one more on Highway 64 as you come in from the Arlington and Fayette County area.

Work on the signs is expected to continue over the next few weeks.
