Lakeland Elementary to Introduce Outdoor Classroom for 2025-2026 School Year

Lakeland Elementary School (LES), consistently ranked among the top elementary schools in Tennessee, is set to enhance its learning environment with the addition of an outdoor classroom, scheduled for completion in time for the 2025-2026 school year.

The LES Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), known for its unwavering support of the school, is fully funding the $250,000 project. The outdoor classroom will feature a covered pavilion and two 60-seat learning areas—one enclosed and one open-air—designed to provide students with a dynamic and immersive educational experience.

Monica Pitts, LES PTA President, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I am excited to get the construction of the Outdoor Classroom started! This has been a few years in the making, and we are thrilled to see it come to life. This innovative space will offer students hands-on learning opportunities and a chance to connect with nature in a unique and enriching way. We couldn’t have made this possible without the support of LES parents! We are eager to see how this will benefit our students, teachers, and the entire school community. Stay tuned for updates on construction!”

The outdoor classroom will be located on the north side of the school building.

LES Principal Dr. Ted Horrell also praised the PTA’s dedication, noting, “The PTA has been working toward this project for several years, and we are very grateful and excited to see it come to fruition. Students learn in many ways, and we believe this new environment will inspire creativity among our teachers and provide fresh opportunities for student engagement. Even something as simple as a change of pace or scenery can have a meaningful impact on learning at LES.”

The project is being designed by The Renaissance Group, and construction preparations are already underway. Contractors held a pre-bid meeting at The Renaissance Group in Lakeland, signaling that the long-anticipated project is moving forward.

With a strong commitment to innovation and student success, LES continues to set the bar for elementary education in Tennessee. The outdoor classroom is expected to be a valuable addition, fostering new learning experiences that will benefit students for years to come.
