Shelby County Mayoral Candidate Discusses Lakeland

Memphis City Councilman Worth Morgan talks politics...

To most people, election season is another year away, but to the candidates, the season has started. Memphis City Councilman Worth Morgan officially launched his campaign to run for Shelby County Mayor this week and the candidate says Lakeland is an important part of his vision. Mr. Morgan will be a candidate in the Republican primary to determine who will run against incumbent Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. The general election day for Shelby County Mayor will be held on August 4th of 2022.

“In my time as an elected official, I’ve strived to bring honesty, transparency, and accountability to local government,” said Mr. Morgan. He continued, “But while other communities around the country have thrived, Shelby County has settled for less than the status quo. You and I both know that we deserve better.”

Mr. Morgan also spoke about Lakeland and why the thriving community is an important part of his plans if elected county Mayor. “Lakeland has built a terrific city to live in and should be recognized as a special community that is thriving in Shelby County,” he told Lakeland Currents. Adding, “I want to walk their neighborhoods and hear from Lakeland how the County Mayor’s office can be a better partner to them and their families.”

Councilman Morgan said he loves Shelby County but feels like many of the current solutions are half-hearted. “The failures of government echo through the generations. High crime rates shouldn’t be normal. Failing to teach children to read is unacceptable. Poverty should never feel inevitable. Our relationship with the state government shouldn’t be broken. The high tax rate and fees we pay shouldn’t be taken for granted by elected officials. Shelby County can’t afford to wait any longer. Now is the time to address these issues head on because we deserve better,” he said.

Mr. Morgan said part of his job if elected Mayor is to help the momentum in Lakeland continue saying, “Lakeland has a great quality of life, and I want to be there to help them continue to excel.”

The county primary election for both Republicans and Democrats will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2022.
