Shelby County Health Department COVID-19 Daily Update: April 5, 2020

Shelby County currently has 754 confirmed COVID-19 cases. The total number of deaths in Shelby County attributed to COVID-19 to 12.

When asked today (4.5.20) for a number of Shelby County residents who have recovered from COVID-19, Joan Carr, public information officer for the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), said, ”We do not have a number of recovered cases to share yet. We do know that more than 80% of people who get the virus have a mild illness and recover completely, but we do not have actual statistics to share with the media.”

The state website shows 416 recovered and explains that category as:

TDH defines “recovered” as people who (1) have been confirmed to be asymptomatic by their local or regional health department and have completed their required isolation period or (2) are at least 21 days beyond the first test confirming their illness.

 

The state site also lists 311 hospitalizations, 43 fatalities and 41,391 tested with 38,070 negative tests. There are 3,321 confirmed cases in Tennessee.

Only essential businesses as spelled out in Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris’s executive order of March 24, 2020, may remain open to the public. The Health Department’s hotline number 833-943-1658, was activated March 12. Since that date, it has fielded hundreds of calls from the general public about COVID-19. Below are statistics about calls into the hotline since March 12 and a daily number of hotline calls fielded yesterday.

The COVID-19 hotline is answered each day, including Saturday and Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
