Both Lakeland schools celebrated their Reward School statuses Friday (10.4.19) with a day of fun, games and celebrations.

Dr. Ted Horrell, superintendent of the Lakeland School System (LSS),

Dr. Ted Horrell

said, “I certainly support the principals and teachers celebrating this accomplishment with their students. Our staff and kids work so hard, and being named a Reward School is cause for celebration. We’re so proud of the students and staff at LES and LMPS.”

He said he appreciated all the parents and community members who made the day so special.

In August, the Tennessee Department of Education announced LSS as an Exemplary District, one of 20 such districts in the state.  Both schools were ranked as Reward Schools and LSS was #1 in the state for grades 3-5 band and #2 in the state for grades 6-8.

LES (Lakeland Elementary School)

Reward Day at LES started with a “Nailed It” competition, said Shelly White, assistant principal. “Mrs. (Joretha) Lockhart (LES principal) and the students who raised the most money in our Boosterthon fundraiser competed by attempting to replicate our lion logo on a cake with supplies donated by Frost Bakery.”

She said LEAD (Leadership, Education and Development) team members served lunch from Pink Flamingo to all faculty and staff and cake from the Bakery. Students were served mini cupcakes from the Bakery as well as ICEE popscicles purchased by the school.  Mascot Leo the Lion from the Roman family’s snow cone truck was on hand to visit with students.

“Each grade level participated in their own fun activities throughout the day. Among class activities was the first grade with a Monster, Inc. theme with slime, a movie and number game to find Mike.  Fourth grade had a game room with Hot Potato and River and Banks.”

Everyone enjoyed some outside time on the first day that felt like fall, she added
