Lakeland Preparatory School will host its annual Tailgate With the Lions on Friday, Aug. 21, starting at 4pm, ahead of the Lions’ season opener against the Covington Chargers. The non-district matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff on the Lakeland Prep Campus and will give the Lions an early test against a proven Covington program. The Lions enter the season with some momentum after a strong showing in last week’s controlled scrimmage, where Lakeland Prep defeated ECS, 20-7. Covington is coming off an impressive 2025 season that ended with a narrow loss to Westview High School in the TSSAA Class 3A State Semifinals. The Chargers are expected to be competitive again this season, setting the stage for a challenging opening-night matchup for the Lions.
The tailgate event will feature a variety of entertainment, including a live DJ, dunk tank, human slot machine, quarterback toss, photo booth, face painting and opportunities to take pictures with Roary, the school mascot. The Lion Walk will begin at 5 p.m., giving attendees a chance to show their blue-and-white pride as the Lions prepare for the season ahead.
A $20 Little Lion Lane wristband will provide access to several activities and include a cold treat and other extras. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase limited-edition tailgate merchandise, including electric fans, bandana bows and turnover chains.
Food and refreshments will also be available throughout the event. The Lakeland Prep Football Boosters will sell pizza, drinks and tailgate T-shirts, while the PTO will offer additional donated drinks for purchase. Families can also purchase items in advance through the PTO’s Givebacks page.
The tailgate will run through 6:30 p.m., and families are encouraged to arrive early to take part in the activities. Community members interested in volunteering can contact the Lakeland Prep PTO for additional information.
