Breaking…
A power outage at approximately 9am this morning (September 30) left hundreds of Lakeland homes without power, as well as Lakeland Elementary School. The outage was expected to last until 1pm forcing school administration to close the school at 11am. The outage created multiple problems since there was no way to provide air conditioning or prepare lunches for students.
When contacted city and school officials both confirmed MLGW did not provide notice of the outage which was apparently planned so a local development (Lakeland Commons) could receive power. Kevin Floyd, Chairman of the Lakeland School Board, expressed frustration saying, “it puts parents in a hard situation picking kids up early and making sure someone is at home to watch them. We also have remote learners without access to internet until power is restored.”
MLGW said there was a breakdown in communication but they are working hard to restore power as quickly as possible.
