Shelby County Schools announced today they will not offer in-person schooling to any of its students. It’s estimated it will affect roughly 154,000 students in the Memphis metro area. In a video released this morning (July 27, 2020) the SCS superintendent, Dr. Joris Ray, said virtual learning will be the only option offered saying “all students will be home for the school day until further notice.”
Speculation if the SCS announcement would change Lakeland’s back to school plan was quickly addressed this afternoon with a post by Lakeland School System. LSS indicated the SCS announcement had no impact on Lakeland’s back to school plan and in-person school would begin as scheduled on August 10th. Virtual learning for the first 9 weeks is also being offering to Lakeland parents as an alternative.
Specifically, the social media post from LSS said,
“We have received some questions regarding whether our return to school plans have changed based on the announcements of other districts, so we wanted to let parents know that we currently have no plans to alter our start date or instructional plans at this time. Our Safer at School plan for returning to school was reviewed and deemed acceptable by the Shelby County Health Department, and we will proceed according to plan barring some new directive.”
