New Text Based Alert System Could Be Coming For Lakeland Residents

An alert system could let residents know about important notices like road closures.

A new phone-based communication system called “Code Red” could be coming soon to Lakeland. That is according to an update from Lakeland City Manager, Michael Walker. The initiative has been advocated by elected officials like Commissioner Michelle Dial during recent Board of Commissioners (BOC) meetings. There have been proposals within the BOC to establish a cell phone/text based system for easily accessible updates, especially since the power outages in the summer of 2023. In a recent city manager update, Mr. Walker announced plans to provide information on signing up for Lakeland’s “Code Red” system. This communication and text alerts system utilizes geo-location and issues text alerts to notify residents about events like road closures, emergencies, and important updates.

According to information on the Lakeland city website, once the system is rolled out, residents will have the option to customize notifications which should help reduce unnecessary or unwanted alerts. This represents another way for the City of Lakeland to stay connected with residents providing useful and timely information.
