Magical New Year’s Eve celebration at LSC this week

Participants at the Lakeland Senior Center’s (LSC) New Year’s Eve Potluck Luncheon Tuesday (12.31.19) said goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020 in a magical way at the IH Clubhouse.

Kim Odom, LSC manager and special events coordinator, said the food tables were filled with homemade side dishes and desserts to go with chicken provided for the event. The selection of dishes included sweet potato casserole, pea salad, green beans, corn bread and a southern New Year’s tradition of black-eyed peas thought to bring prosperity. The dessert table resembled a fine bakery featuring decorated cakes, pies, and fresh baked cookies, brownies and more.

Bringing in the New Year with a bag of tricks was magician Jeffery Day provided by Creative Aging as he shared the history of the Golden Age of Magic and performing illusions from as far back as 1837 to 1901. He impressed the audience with mind-reading tricks and engaged them with card and rope tying tricks. Barbara Taylor mastered a little magic as Day’s assistant during the all familiar “reach in the bag” trick.

“Mr. Day had plenty of magic tricks up his sleeve,” said Ms. Odom. “It was a fun way to close out 2019 and celebrate the New Year.”
