NEHS induction ceremony yesterday at LES

By Wesley Wright, LES parent and Lakeland commissioner

Parents, grandparents and all manner of family descended upon Lakeland Elementary School (LES) yesterday (5.13.19) to witness something unique and special.

The 2019 fourth grade class for NEHS was the largest to date featuring 92 students which more than doubles the previous year of 40. The usual range of inductees falls in between 40 to 50 students.

This gifted group meets the National Elementary Honors Society (NEHS) criteria for Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Responsibility.

The ceremony opened with a processional, a Pledge of Allegiance and a welcome from Principal Joretha Lockhart.

The Special Junior Guest Speaker was Livi Hicks who is the current LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) Chapter President of the National Junior Honor Society.

Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell spoke on the gravity of their accomplishment and taught from UCLA Coach John Wooden’s words on integrity.

Cristi Muston, LES advisor to NEHS, introduced the four criteria used in choosing the new members.  Kim Louis spoke on Scholarship, Mrs. Ashleigh Norman on Leadership, Morgan Troutt on Service and Lou Ann Vaught on Responsibility.

Mrs. Vaught led the presentation of certificates while Ms. Louis led the students in the National Education Honor Society Pledge. Refreshments and drinks were available as the ceremony concluded and photos ensued.

This fourth grade LES track came from the first kindergarten class under Lakeland Schools which formed five years ago.
