A fire yesterday afternoon (7.4.18) damaged a home in North Lakeland, according to Brent Perkins, public information officer for the Shelby County Fire Department (SCFD).
Although the home at 9470 Trotter Drive was damaged heavily, he said, the house is savable and not completely destroyed.
Shelby County records show the home is owned by Nanci and Don Weldon.
An engine arrived in just over seven minutes, said Mr. Perkins, from Brunswick station 69. It was first to reach the fire scene followed by 65 from Lakeland and three other engines working the structure fire. In all there were two dozen fire fighters battling the blaze. “We don’t want to lose a house,” said Mr. Perkins.
When the fire crews arrived, the house was 25% involved with fire, he said. It is believed the fire started by the back porch, but it is under investigation and the how and where has not been confirmed.
Officials do not believe fireworks were a factor in the fire.
Mr. Perkins said two civilians on the scene were treated: one for smoke inhalation and one for a panic attack. He did not know identities of the persons and didn’t believe they were transported to hospitals.
Since it is the Fourth of July holiday week, Mr. Perkins said firefighters are always concerned about fireworks-ignited fires. “We hold our breath that somebody is going to get killed,” he said of private holiday fireworks.
Although legal to buy at one location in Shelby County (Fireworks City in Lakeland), it is illegal to use fireworks privately in the County, said Mr. Perkins.
“I tell people if you are found to be part of the cause of property damage or injury due to fireworks, you will be responsible. The system will hold you responsible and you will have to pay.”
He added public displays (in the various municipalities including Memphis) are certified for safety, including the fireworks display over Garner Lake.
