Lakeland Prep Fall Orchestra Showcase

LC File Photo - LPS Orchestra Fall 2021

Guest Article by Commissioner Wesley Wright, Orchestra Booster Club President.

Last night the Lakeland Orchestra opened up their concert season with a Fall Orchestra Showcase entitled “Yes, We Can Can!.” The program opened up with a delightful medley entitled “The Twelve Weeks of Strings Class” by the LPS Beginning Orchestra, the largest one to date comprised of mostly 6th and 7th grade students. The various musical pieces displayed the foundations of stringed instruments, with narration provided by three orchestra students and Mrs Turner, the director of the Lakeland Orchestra program. The captivated audience was made up of parents, grandparents, family members, friends,  LPS staff and administration – it was a clear show of support and a welcome sight.

During Intermission awards were given to students for top cookie sales which are actually being distributed next week! Attendees were also reminded of the Lakeland Emporium, a new addition to the Lakeland Orchestra arsenal to help raise funds for instruments and a host of other needs. The Emporium offers all residents of Lakeland various Lions spirit wear ranging from hats, to jackets, hoodies, popsockets and lots more (Stores.inksoft.com/lakelandemporium). Also before, during and after intermission those present were able to take advantage of the photo booth set up by some of the Orchestra Booster club (see pic).

A picture booth was set up for attendees to enjoy.

For the second half, the Concert Orchestra performed a diverse mix that really displayed a wide range of styles and techniques. The Concert Orchestra is made up of primarily 7th and 8th grade students and one 5th grader, yes, you heard that right, a 5th grader. The four pieces were the following: “Cripple Creek,” “Age of Heroes,” Millipede Madness” and last but not least “Yes! I Can Can.” Band director Brent Hopper who is always supportive was also present to assist as sound technician. This was the first concert since February 27th 2020, that alone is worth celebrating. Beyond that it is clear that our Orchestra program is in great hands with Mrs Turner at the helm and the arts in general will continue to flourish at LPS.

Our next concert is December 14th at 6:30pm and it’s entitled “Holly Jolly Winter Concert” all are welcome.
