In a heartfelt tribute, the Lakeland Athletic Complex on Memphis-Arlington Road will be renamed the Brody Townsend Athletic Complex, following a unanimous decision by the Lakeland Board of Commissioners (BOC) at Thursday evening’s meeting. The ordinance was championed by Mayor Roman, Vice Mayor Dial, and Commissioners Atkinson, Johnston, and McCarter.
The renaming honors Brody Townsend, a beloved member of the Lakeland community who passed away in July 2022 at just nine years old after a courageous battle with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and aggressive brain cancer. Brody had recently completed the third grade when he was diagnosed.
During the meeting, Jessica Cannon, a close family friend, delivered an emotional testimony about Brody’s enduring spirit and his impact on the community. “Brody was an inspiration to so many,” she said. Mrs. Cannon said Brody loved sports and always encouraged others, even while battling cancer. She said naming the park after him is a perfect way to honor his strength and passion since Brody was a dedicated athlete who played soccer, baseball, ran cross country, swam competitively, and was known for his fierce competitive spirit.
The ordinance quickly garnered widespread support, with over 162 signatures collected in just a few days—far surpassing the 30 required for consideration. Lakeland Prep also holds an annual fundraising baseball game in Brody’s honor, and many in the community run in his memory during the St. Jude Marathon.
Brody’s father, Nick Townsend, expressed deep gratitude during the meeting. “Brody loved his friends, and he loved sports. I can’t think of a better way to honor his memory,” he said. Vice Mayor Dial, the BOC liaison to the Lakeland Parks Board, confirmed the Parks Board’s unanimous support for the renaming. “There are many reasons it would be impactful for the City of Lakeland,” Dial said.
The renaming cements Brody Townsend’s legacy in Lakeland, ensuring his spirit continues to inspire future generations of athletes and community members.
