First Ever International Family Night Next Year at LMPS

LMPS is hosting its first International Family Night next year and the Lakeland community can help with its success.

Matt Adler, principal of LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) said the event will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Cafetorium at the middle school.

It will be a combined event with LES (Lakeland Elementary School).

In the Lakeland School System (LSS), Mr. Adler said there are about 25 different languages spoken by families with about the same number of home countries.

“Additionally, there are over 120 students who are a part of the English as a Second Language program (ESL),” he said. “The ESL program works to improve the English language proficiency of students acquiring English in daily instruction.

“Additionally, we seek to promote cultural diversity with this district-wide event. Parents, teachers, and community members will unite with the purpose of building acceptance and awareness of different cultures in the Lakeland community.”

How can the community help?

  • “We are in need of performance groups that feature music and dance from various cultures. We ask groups to perform for 10-15 minute time slots throughout the event as attendees visit the tables. We welcome professional and amateur groups to volunteer their time,” said Mr. Adler
  • “Additionally, we are in need of donations of paper products for the food samples that each table will distribute. Needed products include paper plates, small bathroom cups, forks, spoons, napkins, and toothpicks.”

“If you are interested in performing at the event or donating funds or paper products for the event, please contact Alison Garland, LMPS ESL teacher, agarland@lakelandk12.org at LMPS or Diann Sorensen, LES English language learner’s teacher dsorenson@lakelandk12.org .

LMPS serves grades 5-8 and opened to students in August of this year.  LES serves grades K-4.
