The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) reports today (6.16.20): 7,090 cases: 4,803 recovered (67.7%); 2,145 current (30.3%); and 142 deceased (2.0%). There have been 100,196 tested in Shelby County: 92.9% negative and 7.1% positive. There have been 56 deaths among nursing homes and vulnerable population facilities. This information is from Joan Carr, public information officer for the SCHD.
It was announced Monday (6.15.20) by the SCHD that the County will not move to Phase 3 of the Back-to-Business Framework because of the largest increase of COVID-19 cases Monday (256) since the start of the pandemic. Dr. Alisa Haushalter, director of the SCHD, said the County has to see a downward trend or leveling off for 14 days before moving into Phase 3.
In announcing the Health Department’s decision yesterday, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland provided a brief summary of the weekly averages for the first two weeks in May and in June.
- May 1-14: Tests: 1335 Positivity Rate: 5.3 New Cases: 72 Hospitalizations: 118
- June 1-14 Tests: 1605 Positivity Rate: 8.8 New Cases: 126 Hospitalizations: 166
With respect to hospitalizations, on June 14th, 78% of acute care beds and 78% of ICU beds were filled at our hospitals under their normal staffing levels, according to Mayor Strickland. “If you count the hospitals’ expanded capacities, those numbers drop to 64% and 52%. Also, these numbers do not include the additional 401 beds available for potential overflow COVID-19 patients at the old Commercial Appeal site. An additional data point, the average age of COVID-19 patients in the hospital is 38-years-old.”
