*The 11 new deaths reported today were all among probable cases, which the Shelby County Health Department began adding to its totals of confirmed COVID-19 cases last week. The definitions of “confirmed” and “probable” cases are listed below. All 11 of these deaths occurred between March 28, 2020 and May 18, 2020. Because this report includes probable cases from previous weeks and months, the death data does not reflect deaths in the 24-hour period of June 20th to June 21st.
A confirmed case is someone who tested positive (via PCR test) for the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).
A probable case is someone who may have tested negative by PCR, tested positive by another type of test (antibody/serology) or may not have been tested at all, but has an illness consistent with COVID-19 and may have other risk factors. For example:
- If a person is a close contact of a COVID-19 case and has a clinically compatible illness, he or she meets the criteria to be a probable case.
- If a health care provider diagnoses a person with clinically-compatible illness with COVID-19, regardless of their test results, this person meets the probable case criteria.
- If a person dies, and the health care provider that signs the death certificate determined COVID-19 disease was the cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death, this person meets the probable case criteria and would be considered a probable death.
It is important to note, for all confirmed and probable cases, public health takes the same actions. All cases (confirmed and probable) undergo a case investigation and contact tracing interview and are asked to isolate per CDC guidance. Their contacts are then contacted and asked to quarantine for 14 days.
The Health Department’s hotline number is 833-943-1658 and is answered daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After-hours calls are returned on the next business day. Total calls received since the line was activated March 12th: 6,472; total calls yesterday: 42.
