As construction progresses along the New Canada Road corridor, Lakeland residents are beginning to see one of Lakeland’s most significant infrastructure projects take shape. The long-anticipated roadway improvement project represents years of planning, engineering, and coordination aimed at enhancing transportation, safety, and connectivity throughout the city.
During a recent discussion with Lakeland City Manager Emily Harrell and members of the city’s engineering team, officials provided insight into the scope and vision behind the project. The conversation highlighted key components of the development, including roadway alignment, intersection improvements, utility relocations, drainage infrastructure, sidewalks, and streetscape enhancements designed to serve the community for decades to come.
One feature that reflects the project’s broader vision is the installation of decorative roadway lighting. Originally approved as part of the corridor’s design plans in 2018, the lighting is intended to do more than illuminate the roadway. City leaders view the fixtures as an important element in creating an attractive and welcoming gateway into Lakeland while complementing the corridor’s transportation improvements.

According to city officials, construction is being completed in phases, beginning near the Ashmont mixed-used development under construction at Canada Road and Davies Plantation Road and advancing north toward Highway 70. Initial work has focused on grading and utility relocation, followed by the installation of curbs, gutters, paving, and additional roadway improvements as each section moves forward.
The nearly $25 million project is funded primarily through federal transportation funding, with the City of Lakeland contributing approximately $5 million in local matching funds. Officials noted that the alignment and overall layout of New Canada Road was approved nearly 20 years ago, underscoring the long-term planning effort that has guided the corridor’s development.
Once completed in 2028, the new roadway is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance public safety, strengthen connectivity between key areas of the city, and elevate the overall appearance of one of Lakeland’s most important transportation corridors. While residents currently see construction crews, heavy equipment, and ongoing earthwork, city leaders emphasize that the activity represents the culmination of decades of vision, engineering, and investment focused on Lakeland’s continued growth and future development.
