
The Lakeland track and field program concluded an outstanding performance at the state championship meet with multiple podium finishes, record-setting moments, and several athletes earning recognition among the best competitors in Tennessee.
Lakeland athletes delivered strong performances across both field and running events, highlighting the continued growth and success of the program. In field competition, Jack Gatewood earned a 6th-place finish in discus, while Mark Foster claimed 7th place in pole vault. Ben Kanda also represented Lakeland well in pole vault competition, securing a 6th-place finish.
One of the most memorable moments of the meet came from the Lakeland girls 3200-meter relay team. Competing in the state championships for the first time in school history, McKenna Stuart, Elizabeth Foster, Abby Stevens, and Addie Beth Johnson delivered a remarkable performance by finishing 8th overall and cementing their place in the school record books.
Lakeland’s sprint relay teams also turned in impressive results on the state stage. The team of Kelsey Phillips, Abby Stevens, Elizabeth Foster, and Emily Acton earned a 7th-place finish in the 400-meter relay before following it up with a 6th-place finish in the 800-meter relay against elite statewide competition.
Individually, Kelsey Phillips continued her standout season with two top-eight finishes. Phillips placed 7th in the 100-meter dash and 8th in the 200-meter dash while competing against some of the top sprinters in Tennessee.
The meet concluded with another strong performance from Lakeland’s middle school 1600-meter relay team. Chloe Cleary, Ryan Willingham, Kayla Miller, and Morgan Johnson capped off the championships with an impressive 5th-place finish.
The state championship meet marked the end of a memorable season for Lakeland track and field, with athletes and coaches celebrating historic achievements, strong finishes, and continued success for the program on the state level.
