LSS Announces No Positive COVID Cases So Far In The School Year

In a talk given to the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting this afternoon (September 23, 2020) Lakeland School System (LSS) Superintendent, Dr. Ted Horrell, announced there’s been no positive student cases of COVID-19 so far in the 2020-2021 school year. Lakeland School System currently has 1,884 students in Grades K-8. Lakeland Elementary has 1,028 (with 236 of those learning remotely) and Lakeland Prep has 856 (with 199 of those learning remotely).

In what’s been an abnormal year to say the least, school officials and administration have taken many precautions, from social distancing to required use of mask, to help avoid any transmission of the virus on school property. Those precautions seem to have worked so far, but Dr. Horrell was quick to point out there’s still a long way to go. He told Lakeland Currents this afternoon, “While we know there are many factors that influence whether schools have positive cases, we also believe we’re doing everything we can to mitigate the risk to our students and staff. We’re very encouraged that we haven’t had student cases in the first six and a half weeks of school, but we know that we probably will eventually. We’re also really proud of our students, staff, and parents for the way they’ve adapted.”
