The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) is investigating a third case of COVID-19 in Shelby County, detected by private laboratory results, according to Joan Carr, public information officer for SCHD.
This case is not related to the first two, and the individual, who is not a resident of Shelby County, had recently traveled to several other states. Based on the travel history, and date of onset of symptoms, the individual appears to have contracted the virus due to exposure outside of Shelby County.
Shelby County Health Department Director Alisa Haushalter said, “The Health Department is now conducting contact tracing to identify persons who may have been exposed to the third case. But the threat to the general public is thought to be low as the individual does not appear to have contracted the virus here in Shelby County.”
The individual, who experienced only minor symptoms, is isolated in a residential setting.
Symptoms of COVID-19 range from mild to severe and include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Older adults and individuals with underlying medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19.
