Lakeland is among seven municipalities participating in “Celebrate Shelby: A New Century of Possibilities” this Sunday with live music, petting zoo, sports and games, learning opportunities, food trucks and a fireworks finale.
The family-friendly event is celebrating 200 years of Shelby County history, from the youngest City – Lakeland, 42 years — to Memphis, which celebrated 200 years this May.
Celebrate Shelby: A New Century of Possibilities
1 – 5:30 p.m. – Sunday (11.24.19)
Hyde Lake at Shelby Farms Park
FREE admission, FREE activities, FREE fireworks
Sunday afternoon weather is predicted to be sunny with temperatures in the mid-50s.
All seven municipalities in Shelby will have a 30×40-foot tent to showcase the best of their towns. At the entrance to the venue, children will receive a small passport booklet to be stamped at each of the seven tents. The reward for seven stamps is a birthday cupcake.
Wesley Wright, Lakeland commissioner coordinating the event for the City, said representatives of Lakeland business and organizations will display information in the Lakeland tent:
Delta Blues Winery Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce
Lakeland Commons Lakeland Education Foundation
St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway 2020 The Lake District
“Our Lakeland tent will be representative of our past as well as our forward trajectory as the top K-8 school system in Tennessee, our upscale growth in The Lake District, Lakeland Commons and more,” said Commissioner Wright.
“Savannah Brister from Lakeland is slated to perform as well as Kevin and Bethany Paige and others. SCSO (Shelby County Sheriff’s Office) is to provide security/traffic control.” There should be plenty of room, he said, for the 3,000 -5,000 guests expected to attend.
