It was a tough night on the court for Lakeland basketball but it was a great night for Homecoming festivities for students, families and staff.
Both the Lady Lions and the men’s team were defeated by West Collierville Thursday evening (11/12/19) in front of a large crowd on the LMPS campus. The Lady Lions faced a full court press all evening and had success against the pressure but West Collierville’s size caused matchup problems for the Lions. Cambell Funk, Carly Brock and Allie Bryan all contributed good points for the Lions but Lakeland came up short.
The men’s team also faced matchup problems. West Collierville had two post players considerably larger than any Lakeland player and with Hayden Kee out (shoulder surgery) and Anthony Hester slowed with injury, it was an uphill battle all evening for the Lions. Head Coach Chance Coleman started out in a 2-3 zone defense to offset the larger Collierville post presence, but the Dragons still worked the ball into their bigger player(s) for easier baskets. Zeke Cowell filled in for injuries admirably and provided good minutes at the point guard position, as did Parker Peeler, but the size discrepancy was simply too much as the Lions fell to the Dragons.
WinterFest Homecoming
The students enjoyed a fun week of Homecoming activates this past week (also known as Winterfest) with each day having a theme. Twin day, tacky day and school pride day were just some of the examples. The homecoming court (5th thru 8th grade) was announced earlier this week (see image below) with the winners for each grade being announced last night during half time of the boys game.
The winners for each grade:
5th – Lord and Lady: Sydney Kee and Brett Godwin
6th – Duke and Duchess: Presley LaRusso and Zeke Cowell
7th – Prince and Princess: Ashlyn Amerine and Creede Criswell
8th – King and Queen: Amanda Villarreal and Anthony Hester
