An out-of-state college professor rehearsed with LMPS band students Friday (4.13.18) followed by a catered dinner and preview concert, all at the middle school.
Dr. Mary Land, assistant professor of music and director of bands at Young Harris College in Youth Harris, GA, came to Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (LMPS), for a Symphonic Band Camp. Dr. Land is also on the Board of Directors for the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.
Anneliese Land, LMPS band director, said the after-school event was great. “After the two-hour rehearsal with the clinician, students, family and friends enjoyed a catered BBQ dinner from Patrick’s Restaurant, then the Concert Band performed a preview concert. I conducted one piece, and Dr. Land concluded the concert by conducting a march entitled “Pride of Lions.” My boosters presented her with a gift of thanks and appreciation.”
The LMPS Band Boosters provided meals for the Concert Band students and family and friends who attended purchased meal tickets.
Mrs. Land said the clinic was made possible by the generosity of the Conn Selmer Division of Education. For more information, visit https://education.conn-selmer.com/en-us/education/educational-clinicians . Conn-Selmer covered the cost of the clinician including travel, housing and an honorarium, said Mrs. Land. “Their mission is to bring master educators and world-class artists to promote schools and help advance band programs across the country,” said Mrs. Land.
The LMPS Band Spring Concert will be a unique experience for the community, scheduled for The LAMP, the amphitheater at IH Park.
The feature of the afternoon will be the world premiere of a new musical piece commissioned by the City to celebrate the history of Lakeland.
According to Mrs. Land, the concert “… will celebrate the inaugural year for LMPS with the premier of a work commissioned by the City that celebrates the history of Lakeland.”
The music title is “Garner Lake Portrait” and the event is designated as “Launching the Lakeland Legacy: A Spring Concert Celebration.”
