LAKELAND, TN (WMC) – Veteran’s Day is right around the corner, but a special tribute to the men and women who served our country was held Wednesday.
The celebration in Lakeland was a huge thank you to Mid-South veterans. An estimated 1,500 veterans, students, parents, faculty, and staff attended the event.
The Veteran’s Day program had everything from parades to performances by the elementary school band. The Glee Club also made an appearance to give thanks to the veterans.
Hundreds of people showed up to show their appreciation, including children at Lakeland Elementary School.
Veterans from different military branches and all walks of life connected with the crowd and shared stories of their time serving the country.
“That was 1945. I joined the Navy in 1943,” Earl Bitenbender told the audience.
Bitenbender is a WWII veteran.
The veterans said they served because they love this country.
“It’s nothing to brag about,” Marion Brown said. “It’s just what we had to do.
