Two tax-free weekends for Tennessee consumers this summer

For 2020 only, the Tennessee General Assembly has approved two sales tax holiday weekends.  During these periods, certain goods may be purchased tax-free including televisions.

The first tax-free holiday weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. Fri. July 31st and ends Sun. Aug. 2nd at 11:59 p.m.  Clothing, school supplies and computers, televisions and electronics priced under certain thresholds may be purchased tax-free.

Only in 2020, on the weekend of Aug. 7th-9th, there will be no sales tax on retail food and drink at restaurants and limited service restaurants.

Anyone can participate in the sales tax holiday weekends.  Online goods priced under the thresholds are eligible.  Items must be purchased for personal use, not for business or trade.  The standard sales tax holiday will resume in 2021.

July 31st – Aug. 2nd – Tax-free on clothing, school supplies, electronics, TVs

Aug. 7th – 9th – Tax-free at restaurants

The threshold on clothing and school supplies is $200 or less, doubled from $100 in previous years.  The $1,500 limit on computers and electronics has been increased to $3,000 and includes televisions under $3,000 this year.
