Travel impacted for those driving I-40 in Fayette County starting tonight

Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) contract crews will close Interstate 40 in Fayette County this weekend to begin the demolition, repairs and replacement of the bridge deck on the SR (State Road) 59 bridge over I-40, according to Nichole Lawrence, community relations officer, region 4, TDOT.

The closures are as follows:

  • Today, June 2 – 7 p.m. through Monday, June 4 – 6 a.m.: CLOSE and detour I-40 east and westbound onto existing ramps at Exit 35 (SR 59) to allow for demolition of SR 59 bridge over I-40.
  • Monday, June 4 through Wednesday, June 6 – 7 p.m. – 6 a.m.: CLOSE and detour I-40 east and westbound onto existing ramps at Exit 35 (SR-59) to allow for demolition of SR 59 bridge over I-40 each night.

SR 59 will also be closed to through traffic over the interstate. The speed limit is reduced to 50 MPH on I-40 during the closures. THP (Tennessee Highway Patrol) will assist with traffic control. All work is weather dependent.
