Traffic Light Proposed for Dangerous Lakeland Intersection

Evergreen Road and Highway 70 on May 6, 2025. A traffic could be coming to this location.

Relief may be on the way for drivers navigating one of Lakeland’s most dangerous intersections. A traffic light could soon be installed at Evergreen Road North and Highway 70, a crossing that residents have long considered hazardous.

The intersection, located near hills on both sides of Highway 70, creates blind spots for drivers trying to turn onto the highway or onto Evergreen Road North. The limited visibility has contributed to numerous accidents each year and sparked growing frustration among residents, many of whom have voiced concerns at Board of Commissioners (BOC) meetings and on social media.

Tonight, the BOC will consider a resolution at a special-called meeting at Lakeland Town Hall to authorize the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection. Mayor Josh Roman, who is sponsoring the resolution, says the move could lead to immediate improvements.

If the resolution is approved a temporary light could be installed as soon as late summer. “Shelby County Commissioner Mick Wright and the Shelby County Commission have already approved tax increment financing tied to a new development across from Lakeland Town Square, which will help fund safety improvements along Highway 70,” Roman told Lakeland Currents.

Roman added that a traffic study was already underway, and officials recognize the intersection as a priority. “We know Evergreen and Highway 70 is a problem intersection, so acting now on this red light should make an immediate difference,” he said.
