“The Night of the Arts” – This month at LMPS – Free to the community

The community is invited to “The Night of the Arts” at Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (LMPS) March 28th starting at 5 p.m.

The free events will flow from the school entry to the library and gym and feature musical performances, an art show, dance lessons and open mic night for students.  The evening activities are sponsored by the LMPS Fine Arts Department.

The Night of the Arts

LMPS

March 28th

Starting at 5 p.m.

Bethany Christy, LMPS librarian and one of the program coordinators, said the evening will include the Honor Choir, Art Show, Dance Lessons and Jazz Band and Orchestra Ensembles.  Light refreshments will be served at 6:20 p.m.

The event was born from a Poetry Slam a year ago, said Ms. Christy. She said this year she changed the name to Open Mic Night.  “Mr. (Jared) Parham (arts teacher) and I discussed earlier this year having the Open Mic Night and Art Show together.

“We thought we would have light refreshments and ask if the orchestra students might be interested in playing while families viewed student artwork.”

Ms. Christy said Coach Kimber Rahm heard about the Open Mic Night and offered to provide dance lessons and healthy snacks along with Susan Rice Noah, coordinated school health coordinator for the Lakeland School System.

Then the choir, band and orchestra directors were invited, and once on board, the new event was born, said Ms. Christy.

Rachel Nanney, art teacher, and Mr. Parham are in charge of the art show.

Mrs. Rahm, head of the Healthy School Team at LMPS, and Mrs. Rice are coordinating the dance lessons and snack.

Ms. Christy is in charge of the Student Open Mic Night. “Students are invited to create original short plays, short stories, songs and comedy routines. Students may act out their skits and sing their songs, but all of their material must be original.”

Musical presentations are coordinated by Anneliese Land, band director, Tonya Miller, choir director and Paula Turner, orchestra director.

“We are all working together to make this happen,” said Ms. Christy.
