Tennis courts have new logo along with Christmas decorations

Lakeland tennis courts for Christmas

Lakeland tennis courts are among various sites throughout Lakeland decorated for the holiday season.

A windscreen around the courts is sporting a Lakeland city logo which is decorated with a bow and wreaths.

A $23,000 project started on the tennis courts last month with resurfacing.  The City received a $10,000 grant to refurbish the two tennis courts at 9822 Beverle Rivera Drive in Windward Slopes Park.

Kevin Rooney, director of the City Parks and Recreation Department, said the grant was issued by the United State Tennis Association and was matched with $13,000 from the Parks budget.

The funds were earmarked for the resurfacing, new windscreens, shade benches for players, new net pots and manual scoreboards.

“We also have an Eagle Scout who is going to build shade structures for the existing benches on the outside of the court,” said Mr. Rooney.

Other parts of town are bedecked with reminders it is the Christmas season.  From City Hall to Lakeland Elementary School, to IH Park and down Canada Road the holiday feeling is evident. The interchange bridge railing at I-40 and Canada Road has garland and red bows for traffic going east and west.

And alongside many of the decorations are multicolored pansies which will linger with their winter blooms long after the Christmas season.  City crews have planted the flowers at City Hall, IH Park and gateway signs.
