It’s officially summer for Lakeland schools and especially for the 4th graders who had a “Send-Off Drive-Thru Parade” yesterday (5.22.20) at LES (Lakeland Elementary School).
The COVID-19 pandemic shut schools in March but Friday (5.22.20) was to be the official last day of school for the 2019-20 year in the Lakeland School System (LSS).
Fourth-grade teachers welcomed their students to the campus for the final time as the students are headed in August to Lakeland Middle Preparatory School, which serves grades 5-8.

What started as a rainy morning morphed into a beautiful sunny day to greet students while practicing social distancing. The teachers waved and cheered from the carpool line as the students and grownups drove by. (Rain returned as gusty winds and thunderstorms hit the area about 4:30 p.m. yesterday and left many in Lakeland and the Memphis-area without power well into Saturday.)
“Once an LES Lion, Always an LES Lion” read the first series of signs for the passing cars. “We will miss you” read another. There were streamers and blue and white balloons with teachers cheering and car horns honking. Principal Joretha Lockhart was wearing her LES mask, greeting the students along with Dr. Ted Horrell, Lakeland School System superintendent and Assistant Principals Shelly White and Laurie Waycaster.
