School Board Calls Special Meeting To Address Club Issues

The Lakeland School System issued a statement this afternoon, January 3, 2022, that the monthly Business meeting scheduled for next Monday, January 10, 2022, has been cancelled.

However, a special called meeting will be held Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at 5:45pm.  The agenda for that meeting has not been made available yet, but in an email sent to Lakeland School System parents, the postponement is due to two additional legal opinions regarding non-curricular clubs.

At last month’s school board meetings, discussion was held and public comments were heard regarding the formation of a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Club at Lakeland Preparatory School.  According to a school email sent out this afternoon, “student leaders have withdrawn their request for a GSA club. Instead, they have requested approval for a new club called Allies of Diversity.”  The new club will “explore equity, diversity, and multiculturalism as it relates to students’ lives within the Lakeland community. Allies of Diversity welcomes all people, cultures, genders, orientations, beliefs, and religions.”

At next week’s meeting, the Board will be considering these opinions in regard to policy decisions that may or may not be necessary for non-curricular clubs in the Lakeland School System.
