It was a myriad of vibrant costumes, tantalizing food choices and enlightening posters that filled the LMPS Cafetorium tonight (2.27.18) for the first-ever and free International Family Night from 5:30 – 7 p.m.
Participants were shoulder-to-shoulder viewing information about countries from all over the globe, listening to the entertainment and sampling a variety of food items.
The smorgasbord of cultural foods and entertainment was coordinated by both LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) and LES (Lakeland Elementary School) ESL teachers under the direction of the Lakeland School District (LSS) ESL (English as a Second Language) Department.
Chairing the event were ESL Teachers Alison Garland, LMPS, and LeeAnn Kelly and Diann Sorensen, LES. Jennifer Cockroft heads the ESL Department for LSS.
The purpose, according to LMPS Principal Matt Adler, was to promote cultural diversity and build acceptance and awareness of different cultures in the Lakeland community.
He noted that within the School System there are about 25 languages spoken by families with about the same number of home countries.
“Additionally, there are over 120 students who are a part of the English as a Second Language program (ESL),” he said. “The ESL program works to improve the English language proficiency of students acquiring English in daily instruction.
Student and community groups entertained guests, starting with Ted Horrell and The Monday Night Card, followed by the LES Guitar Club and other groups. Dr. Horrell is the LSS superintendent by day.
Tables were decorated with cultural artifacts, clothing and food samples with grown-ups and students dressed in native outfits.
LMPS serves grades 5-8 and opened to students in August 2017. LES serves grades K-4. Students attend Arlington High School through an interlocal agreement until a high school is built in Lakeland.
