Emily Harrell, City Engineer for the City of Lakeland, released the following urgent statement earlier today:
“Effective Wed, June 12 the City is launching an educational campaign to help residents learn what items are/are not acceptable in our Recycle Bins. Memphis Recycling has started charging Contamination Fees for items that are not recyclable at their facility. Over the last 2 months the City of Lakeland has been charged $6,864 in contamination fees. Staff will be spot checking Recycle Bins for non-acceptable materials. If the bin contains items which are not acceptable, a yellow hang tag will be placed on the bin identifying the unacceptable item(s). Team Waste will not collect the bin until the item is removed. All unacceptable items should be placed in your household trash bin. For a list of acceptable recyclable materials, please visit www.lakelandtn.gov.”
Below is a picture of the hang tag that will be placed on bins with unacceptable items.
