There will be an official re-opening ceremony at the Windward Slopes tennis courts April 30th.

Kevin Rooney, director of Lakeland Parks and Recreation, said work on the courts was finished in December including resurfacing, shaded benches and windscreens with the Lakeland City logo.

The ceremony will start at 4 p.m. with City elected officials and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members invited.  “City officials will attend to thank the representatives of the USTA (United States Tennis Association) for their generosity in helping promote the growth of tennis in Lakeland. Also on hand will be David DeGutis, local tennis instructor to showcase the new courts.”

The courts are part of Windward Slopes Park at 9700 Beverle Rivera Drive next door to the Shelby County Fire Department station.

“The Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department was the recipient last fall of a large grant from the USTA,” said Mr. Rooney.  “That $10,000 grant was earmarked for a much needed resurfacing of the city’s tennis courts.”
