The newly formed LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) Quiz Bowl Team competed in the White Station Middle School Winter Invitational Quiz Bowl Invitational Saturday (2.15.20).
The team finished 2-3 in pool play with Akhil Durgam, LMPS 6th grader, recognized with a medal as the 17th highest individual scorer for the morning. Team member Ryne Green was sick and not able to compete. Thirty-two teams and a total of 143 students attended the Invitational.
Others on the team are Toby Harrell, Cullen Hutchens and Bennett Hale.
Melissa Richarde, ELA teacher and coach, said, “We are very proud of our 2019-2020 LMPS Quiz Bowl team and cannot wait to see where we go from here.”
A grant from the Lakeland Education Foundation funded materials for the new team. “Thanks to a grant from the Lakeland Education Foundation that allowed us to purchase a new team question starter set and a high-tech 10-player buzzer system, LMPS was able to invite students to join our Quiz Bowl Team.
“We currently have five active members of the team who have been meeting from 7 – 7:45 a.m. Monday and Wednesday mornings.”
Along with Mrs. Richarde, sponsors are Audrey Abel-Martin and Keith Adams. They meet to discuss current events and test students’ knowledge through a series of quiz-type activities to review topics from history, science, math, literature, sports, music and pop culture,” she said. “We even hosted two mock competitions with LMPS faculty to help our students prepare for the White Station Middle School Quiz Bowl Invitational.”
