New Lakeland Lions Branding

Alternative brand marks

At the school board meeting this past Monday evening superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell presented a slate of new marks and brands for Lakeland schools.

The new logos reflect the growing brand of the Lakeland Lions and provide more options based on the needs of teachers and coaches. Dr. Horell worked with local company MarketVex to help bring new ideas to life. MarketVex is founded by former school board member and city commissioner Matt Wright.

Dr. Horrell said in a statement provided to Lakeland Currents “The Lakeland Lion’s head logo has been really successful and popular with our students and parents, and we learned through trial and error that we needed a wider variety of applications. For example, the lion’s head doesn’t provide enough contrast when used on a light blue background. Working with MarketVex, we set out to standardize the ways the current logo could be used but also introduced several additional elements that could be used independently or together. We also wanted to establish an official “Lakeland Font” that was separate from the individual school and school system marks. We’re really excited to see the alternative marks applied by the teams and clubs to further enhance school and community pride.”

The Lion head logo has been used in a variety of ways for 3 years and is already well recognized. According to local resident Elisa Hoskins, “When you see that light blue lion you immediately know it’s Lakeland. It gives a sense of community pride.”

While the Lion head will still be the primary logo and mark, 3 new logos have also been introduced along with guidelines on using the marks (as seen below). The font chosen as the official typography for Lakeland will be a consistent look thru the years and will help further build the Lakeland brand according to the meeting Monday evening.

Matt Wright said, “This project was once again a labor of love. I brought in Kahla Laurie, a very talented illustrator and designer we’ve used on previous projects and we were extremely happy with the results. It will help grow the respected Lakeland Lions brand in the Memphis area for years to come.”
