This year Memphis celebrates its 200th anniversary with events including the Memphis in May International Festival and a lecture series at the Pink Palace Museum.
During its history of 42 years, Memphis in May has saluted the cultures of 38 different countries. This year the Festival will recognize its hometown and the history, culture and vision of Memphis and Shelby County.

The lifelong Memphian will be featured in a “Making Memphis: Storytelling with Jimmy Ogle” series of hour-long noon talks which are open to all. Topics include a history of Memphis music, women in Memphis history and the historic Memphis riverfront. Mr. Ogle presented many of his historical talks at the Lakeland Senior Center last year.
“One of my dreams is coming true, thanks to the Pink Palace Family of Museums,” said Mr. Ogle.

“We have figured out that there are 150 hours in my head of “B Roll” about Memphis for walking tours and lectures,” said Mr. Ogle. “In February and March, I will give twelve free lectures of my favorite topics in the historic Mansion Theatre at the Pink Palace Museum, 3050 Central at noon on Mondays and Thursdays, February 4th – March 14th. Anybody may attend and parking is free, too.”
He said the series will be filmed for future free access in the archives of the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, Ned R. McWherter Library at the University of Memphis and at the Pink Palace.
“This is my ‘Bicentennial Gift’ to Memphis in 2019,” added Mr. Ogle.
