While there was a very slight increase compared to May of 2020, overall, Lakeland received a positive crime report from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for May of 2021.
The crime report for May 2020 showed 29 incidents while this May had 31 incidents, an increase of two. Nine of the 31 incidents reported in May were listed as theft from motor vehicles. Theft from unlocked cars has long been an issue that representatives from the Sherriff’s office have said can be solved simply by locking cars.
Most reported crimes came from the general area of Highway 64 and Commissioner Wesley Wright said he would like to see an increase in Flock security cameras in that area of Lakeland. Currently there are 20 Flock security cameras in Lakeland but Commissioner Wright believes there’s room in the budget for more. He said, “Our budget has room for additional Flock cameras and I think 5 to 10 cameras are the target range needed for exposed areas in particular the 64 corridor.”
