The Lakeland School System has announced school closures for Thursday, January 5, 2002:
“Due to the uncertainty of tomorrow’s forecast coupled with the predicted timing of the bad weather and Lakeland School System’s desire to give parents as much notice as possible to make alternate arrangements, Lakeland School System schools will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 6th.”
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Shelby County is under a Winter Weather Advisory effective Thursday from 3:00am to 6:00pm. Mixed precipitation is expected with total snow and sleet accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze in portions of North Mississippi, West Tennessee, East Arkansas and Southeast Missouri.
Causing problems on the roads, the NWS says, “Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Power outages may be expected due to ice accumulations.”
