LSS Plans Transition Back To Normal Schedule

The Lakeland School System released a video message today, March 12, from Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell.  In the video, Dr. Horrell says that data suggests Lakeland students are meeting or exceeding the previous year’s academic benchmarks in almost every instance.  He also highlights six issues relating to the end of this school year, summer activities and plans for the future:

  • LPS Principal Matt Adler has secured a date and location for an in-person 8th grade graduation ceremony.  The event will be held May 18th at Bellevue Baptist Church.
  • LES will once again host Kindergarten Camp and Camp Invention this summer.
  • Both schools will host a four week learning camp this summer for students who may qualify for additional instruction or intervention.  Students will be notified after Spring Break and given additional information.
  • Currents trends are in our favor to return to 5 day/week in-person instruction for the 21-22 school year.  Online registration is live now.
  • After Spring Break, LPS will be posting the position for Vice Principal of the High School.  This position will be responsible for the planning of academic, athletic, fine arts and career technical education offerings beginning in August 2022.  Dr. Horrell says the Vice Principal will be the direct contact for questions about the high school and will have a full year to get to know the preferences, goals and personalities of our students and community.
  • Finally, State of TN mandated TCAP testing will proceed with in-person assessment, including remote learners.  The testing schedules can be found HERE for LES and HERE for LPS.

This encouraging message comes on the last day of the 3rd quarter, one year after the students were sent on Spring Break and didn’t return to school for 5 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Dr. Horrell closed his video with this, “While we will likely always remember the challenges of the past school year, the future is very bright for Lakeland and our Lakeland Lions family.”
