LSB Work Session: Perhaps 12 new classrooms at LES, and under budget

LSB Board in meeting tonight

The Lakeland School Board (LSB) met in work session tonight (6.4.18) at City Hall and heard results on bids for work at LES.

In his report, Dr. Ted Horrell, Lakeland School System (LSS) superintendent, announced bid openings on the expansion/improvement work at LES (Lakeland Elementary School).

He said the base bid for eight new classrooms, a secure building entrance and general facelift was $2.387 million.  There was an additional bid of $347K for four more classrooms.

So for $2.7 million the elementary school could get 12 classrooms along with expansion of the cafeteria, resurfacing and striping of the parking lot and landscaping for under the planned $3 million budget, said Dr. Horrell.

Twelve classrooms aren’t needed at this time, said Dr. Horrell, but it will give the System some breathing room.

At the end 2017-18 school year, there were 930 students at LES in PS-4th grade.  The new school in town, LMPS, finished with 713 students in grades 5-8.  LMPS opened to students in August 2017.  Lakeland students attend Arlington High School (AHS) through an interlocal agreement until a high school is built.

Although the LES classroom work isn’t to be completed until February 2019, Dr. Horrell expects the secure entrance and resurfacing to be ready for the start of school which is Aug. 13.

Since the bid has not been accepted, the contractor was not rervealed tonight.

Dr. Horrell also announced work is starting on the Athletic Fields at LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School).  Money to build the fields comes from the $3 million+ in excess funds left from bond proceeds on building the middle school in 2017.

The project is to include

  • Artificial turf football field with lights and adequate seating for middle school events
  • Regular turf soccer field with lights and adequate seating for middle school events
  • Adequate parking for these events

The hope, he said, is to have some of the end of the season LMPS football games on the home field.

Also in his report, Dr. Horrell discussed FLOAT, which is Flexible Learning Opportunities Advanced Training for teachers, which is self-directed learning.

He said the cell tower at LES is to be constructed in July. And he reviewed the few teacher openings at both schools.

Items under the #8 discussion section were all moved to the June 11 regular meeting as was discussion on a new contract with Dr. Horrell.
