The Lakeland School Board met tonight (8.12.19) at City Hall for a business session with Dr. Ted Horrell, Lakeland School System superintendent, giving a first-day-of-school report.
He said the big news is that it was the first day of school and it was mostly a smooth day. He noted there were some bus adjustments to be made, but teachers were excited to see the students and likewise he thought students were excited to be back in school.
Enrollment numbers, or “in seats,” released after day one are Lakeland Elementary School (LES): 955; and Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (LMPS): 827. LES serves grades K-4 with grades 5-8 at LMPS.
Dr. Horrell said another count of students will be available after the first 20 days of school when enrollment is reported to the state.

High school students in Lakeland attend Arlington High School (AHS) via an interlocal between the two cities until a high school is built in Lakeland. Plans are on the table to finance the first high school in the City and open to 9th graders estimated by August 2022. Cost would be $40 million to add grades 9-12 behind the current middle school if a USDA loan is approved for the school.
The July financial report is online and Dr. Horrell commented the School System financially is where it should be for this time of the year.
The consent agenda with 12 items was approved. Seven of the eight discussion items were approved. The first discussion item regarding school support organizations was amended with all agreements ending July 31, 2020. As amended, the item was approved.
Action on Policy 6.308 dealing with bus safety and conduct was deferred to the September meeting.
Among announcements was the date for the September LSB meeting. Because of Labor Day and a superintendent conference, LSB will have their business meeting Sept. 16th.
