First up was discussion to nominate a Lakeland resident for the TSBA (Tennessee School Board Association) Volunteer of the Year Award. Board Member Deborah Thomas said TSBA is the Lakeland School System’s (LSS) connection to Nashville and each year TSBA honors a school volunteer with the special recognition award.
She reviewed the award, noting the nominee should demonstrate exemplary leadership, credibility, cooperation and hard work. In describing the person she wanted to nominate, she said the candidate helps with special projects and ongoing activities. She said the person is the hallmark of participation at school.
The nominee is Stacey Cartwright and the Board unanimously approved her selection to be submitted for the annual award.
LSB Vice Chair Laura Harrison said Mrs. Cartwright is always at school, willing to help, even if the project does not benefit her child. “She came up with the idea of TCAP (Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program) treats last year with encouraging notes for the students before testing. She has been an amazing asset to the children in our school system.”
Dr. Ted Horrell, LSS superintendent, said, “In addition to all the great volunteer work she does, she seems to always be in one of the two concession stands. I actually asked if she would help consult on the concession stand and design for the new high school.”
The second item on the agenda was an amendment to the Fiscal Year 19-20 budget. Dr. Horrell said the amendment was a matter of timing. “We have in the budget that the Board just approved an amount of money to purchase a grade level’s worth of Chromebooks for LMPS for next year.
“We’re making a transfer from funds that will not be needed in transportation for this year and transferring them into other contracted services at the central office so we can go ahead and make this order immediately.”
Board Member Jeremy Burnett had a scheduling conflict and was unable to attend the meeting.
